Beyond the Textbook: Who We Are in the Classroom

Facilitator: Elizabeth Bynum, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Music

Through small group discussions, we will approach several questions to consider how we interact with our students and shape our learning environments. This CETLI workshop will feature several returning graduate instructors in Music who will help us discuss these themes. Sample questions include: How do we create assignments, lesson plans, and syllabi that make space for the varied experiences that we as teachers and our students bring to the classroom? How could our written assignments do more to encourage students to critically draw on their own knowledge and previous experiences? What are student expectations of us as teachers? How does that vary based on our own positionality?

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Music department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
