Building Community in the Classroom

Facilitator: Tyler Leigh, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Communication

Students learn best when they feel like they belong in the classroom, yet many students feel that they don’t belong. What can we do as graduate student teachers to promote feelings of belonging and community within our classrooms so our students can learn to the best of their abilities? This workshop will focus on a few tools graduate student instructors can use to build community within our classrooms, including: co-creating classroom expectations and norms with students; providing space for student dialogue and discussion; enabling students to form relationships with one another; and deliberately providing opportunities for students to get to know the instructor(s). By the end of this workshop, you should have a handful of new tools and ideas you can use to build community in your own class!
