Designing Effective Exams

Convener: Steve Renette, CETLI Greaduate Fellow, Art & Archaeology of the Mediterranean World

Exams remain a common tool for evaluating students’ mastering of course material. In this workshop, we will explore how exams can help both the teacher and the students to successfully complete the course. While exams might seem to be an objective tool to test knowledge and skills, we will consider exams rather as a pedagogical tool to assist students in mastering course material and developing skills such as phrasing responses to questions, developing arguments, and communicating with brevity and clarity. We will work with examples to identify strengths and weaknesses, and participants are encouraged to bring their own exams from midterms or finals.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
