Designing Problems for STEM Classes

Facilitator: Thomas Brazelton, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Mathematics

What constitutes a “good problem” in a STEM class? Problem sets, forming a major part of assessment, can serve as more than just reinforcement of knowledge with an eye towards test prep. Effectively designed problems can acclimate students to a discipline, and introduce and strengthen methods of solution while simultaneously serving course goals. In this workshop we will discuss how educational strategies like scaffolding and backwards design can lead us to re-envision problem design in the STEM classroom.
