Encouraging & Assessing Student Participation

Facilitator: Chloe Ricks, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Political Science

Many TAs find themselves leading eerily silent undergraduate classrooms where there are few questions answered and even fewer questions asked. While individual students’ method and frequency of participation vary, how do we make sure everyone who wants to participate has the chance to? This workshop will explore various methods to encouraging student participation such as pacing of recitations and idea building with students. We will also discuss ways to assess participation that don’t simply favor the most talkative or outspoken students. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to name ways that TAs can clearly communicate expectations around and foster various types of participation, and students can more readily communicate their knowledge (or questions) to their instructors and peers.

Counts towards the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
