Leading Effective Office Hours

Facilitator: Jessica Weakly, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics

Office hours may have helped you through the toughest parts of your courses as an undergraduate. Now, as a TA, students may view your guidance in office hours as essential to their learning. Office hours offer you the chance to get to know your students individually and adapt your teaching to help them get the most out of the time. Some students may frequent your office hours just to check their understanding, while others may come to you as a last resort when every other resource has failed. Since you won’t know who is about to walk in the room, office hours require you to have some flexibility. In this workshop, we will discuss strategies for managing office hours so that we can help students effectively and efficiently, whether we have one student in the room or our entire recitation section. We will also consider how we can incorporate inclusive teaching into our office hours and use the time to encourage and support students.
