When teaching music survey courses, histories of colonialism and slavery are frequently essential historical frames. How do we teach these topics and other sensitive histories and contexts in such a way that avoids reducing them to context, and instead explores their significance in the formation of music and disciplinary histories? How do we navigate this teaching within the university environment, and specifically Penn?

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Music department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
