Teaching Introductory Labs

Convener: Emilie Benson, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Physics & Astronomy

Introductory labs can be used to supplement and reinforce what is taught in the classroom, but how do we give our students a more valuable experience than simply going through the motions of their lab manuals? This workshop will focus on how to give your students a thought-provoking laboratory experience that deepens their understating and interest in what they are learning. We will discuss how to use the lab as a first exposure to a topic as well as how to emphasize what they have already been learning. This will include how to structure your lab, gauging students’ understanding and increasing participation.
