Working Well as Part of a Teaching Team

Facilitator: Jeremy Rubin, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Biostatistics

Larger classes often require the support of multiple teaching assistants (TAs) who may have different titles and responsibilities. In addition to other TAs, careful coordination must also take place with all course instructors. How can student work be evaluated fairly by different TAs if they have different grading styles and expectations for the content of the submitted work? Who should be the first point of contact to cover for a section if a TA knows they will be absent? How should a TA communicate student concerns to the course instructors in a manner that is respectful to both the students and instructors? In this workshop, we will devise strategies which TAs can use to ensure fair treatment across different TA tutelage, course content dissemination in a way that aligns with the instructors’ expectations, and effective communication between all members of the teaching team.
